The Gloucester Pre-School is a non-profit childcare centre, run by a volunteer Management Committee, catering for children from 3 to 5 years old. The extensions allowed the increase from 29 places per day to 45 places.  With this project, we were determined to improve on the existing building.

Of particular importance in the context of a preschool building was to embed an intrinsic sense of play in the new work in contrast to the existing building.  Inside, the new ‘glowing wall’ has been creatively adapted for the display of illuminated artwork and the new internal space interacts with the outdoor play areas with windows positioned at child height.  The undercroft space below the new extension required a playful imagination to integrate this space with existing playground environment and the quality of this space is the result our collaboration with the preschool staff and the landscaper.
