After seeing the outdoor art space we designed for the Manning Regional Art Gallery, the clients asked us to design a similar outdoor space for an existing cafe in a locally list heritage building in Wingham.
The existing building originally contained a small retail premises, a cafe and entry to a first floor residence. The client was interested in providing flexible spaces to create opportunities for a variety of retail and professional uses. Pivotal to this was utilising the rear north facing yard for an outdoor area for the cafe.
The client’s pragmatic desires were achieved through the functional yet well composed reuse of the existing materials. The relationship of the project to the client’s low impact and reuse philosophy made it a natural fit. It provided an outlet for their skills while accommodating their desire to use minimal resources to achieve a maximised result.
